Flying Into Miami or Fort Lauderdale for Your Cruise? How to Choose the Right Airport (and Get to the Port)

You’ve booked the cruise. Next you have to decide which airport to fly into. South Florida has two major cruise ports, Port Miami and Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, and each has a major airport nearby: Miami International (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International (FLL).

The choice affects your airfare, the stress of embarkation day, and how you get to the ship with all your luggage. Wide Angle has been driving travelers around South Florida since 1997, and this guide covers what you need to choose well and get to the pier on time.

The Quick Answer: Which Airport Should You Fly Into?

If you’re short on time, here’s the rule of thumb:

  • Sailing from PortMiami? Fly into MIA. It’s the closest airport to the port.
  • Sailing from Port Everglades? Fly into FLL. The airport and the cruise port are almost next door.
  • Found a much cheaper fare at the “other” airport? That works too. A private transfer between airports and ports is easy to book. Just leave more time for the longer drive.

The rest of this guide explains the trade-offs so you can decide for your own trip.

MIA vs. FLL at a Glance

Miami International (MIA) Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
Closest cruise port PortMiami Port Everglades
Typical drive to Port Miami About 20–30 minutes About 45–75 minutes
Typical drive to Port Everglades About 40–60 minutes About 10–15 minutes
Airport size Large international hub, many long-haul and international routes Smaller, generally quicker to get through
Airfare Strong for international and long-haul flights Often competitive on domestic routes, including budget carriers
Best for International travelers and PortMiami cruisers Domestic travelers and Port Everglades cruisers

Drive times are estimates. South Florida traffic changes a lot by time of day, day of the week and season, especially on I-95.

Getting From MIA to PortMiami

This is the shortest and most popular cruise route in South Florida. PortMiami is roughly 8–10 miles from Miami International, on Dodge Island just off downtown Miami.

The drive is short, but embarkation mornings can be messy. On busy days several ships board at once, so the port roads back up and the drop-off curbs get crowded. Rideshare pickups at MIA can also involve long walks with luggage and surge pricing when lots of travelers land at once.

Local tip: Ask your driver to drop you at the exact terminal for your ship. PortMiami has several cruise terminals, and they’re far enough apart that walking between them with suitcases isn’t realistic.

Getting From FLL to Port Everglades

If you’re sailing from Fort Lauderdale, FLL is hard to beat. Port Everglades is only a few miles from the airport, and on a good day the drive takes 10–15 minutes.

The short distance makes FLL a stress-free choice for Port Everglades sailings. You can often land the same morning and still reach the terminal in time, though we still recommend flying in the day before (more on that below).

Crossing Over: MIA to Port Everglades or FLL to PortMiami

Sometimes the best fare is at the “wrong” airport. Plenty of travelers fly into FLL and sail from PortMiami, or the reverse.

That’s a sensible way to save money as long as you plan for it:

  • FLL to PortMiami covers roughly 25–30 miles, mostly on I-95. Allow at least an hour, and more during morning rush.
  • MIA to Port Everglades is about the same distance going north. Allow 45–60 minutes or more.

Compare the cost of the transfer with the airfare savings. For a family or group, a private transfer between Miami and Fort Lauderdale often costs about the same as two separate rideshares, and everyone rides together with their luggage.

Your Transportation Options Compared

Once you’ve picked an airport, you have to get to the ship. Here’s how the main options compare.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
  • Pros: Easy to order, and usually affordable for one or two people.
  • Cons: Surge pricing on busy cruise days, limited luggage space, and possible waits at the airport. Larger groups usually need two or more cars.
Taxi
  • Pros: Available at both airports with no app needed.
  • Cons: Fares change with traffic, vehicles vary in size and condition, and big groups with lots of luggage are hard to fit.
Cruise Line Shuttle
  • Pros: Booked through your cruise line, and it takes you straight to your ship’s terminal.
  • Cons: Usually priced per person, so it adds up for families. You may wait for other passengers or for luggage to be collected, and you run on the line’s schedule.
Private Transfer
  • Pros: Your driver meets you at arrivals, everyone rides together with their luggage, the price is set in advance, and you’re dropped at your ship’s exact terminal. It’s also the most cost-effective option for groups.
  • Cons: It needs to be booked ahead, especially in peak cruise season.

For families, multi-cabin groups and anyone with a lot of luggage, a private transfer is usually the least stressful way to start the cruise. Our airport transfer service in Miami covers how it works, from flight tracking to meeting you at arrivals.

Tips for Families and Groups Traveling to a Cruise

Groups have the most to gain from careful planning. Here’s what we’ve learned from many years of cruise transfers:

  1. Count your bags, not just your people. Cruise travelers pack heavy, and a group of six can easily have 10–12 large suitcases plus carry-ons. A high-roof Sprinter van fits passengers and luggage in one vehicle, so nobody has to split up.
  2. Book one vehicle for everyone. When a group splits across several rideshares, people arrive at different times, often at different terminals. One vehicle keeps everyone together.
  3. Plan for car seats. If you’re traveling with small children, sort out car seats before you land. Ask about them when you book.
  4. Share your flight details. A transfer company that tracks your flight can adjust pickup time if you’re delayed, so you aren’t paying for waiting or scrambling for a new ride.
  5. Send your ship and terminal details. Your driver can plan the best route and drop-off point ahead of time.

Should You Fly In the Day Before Your Cruise?

Yes, if you can. Cruise ships won’t wait for late passengers. A delayed or cancelled flight on embarkation morning can mean missing the ship, and then catching up with it at the next port at your own expense.

Flying in the day before:

  • Protects you against delays and cancellations.
  • Gives you an evening to relax, have dinner and see some of the city.
  • Lets you board early the next morning and start your vacation sooner.

Don’t Forget the Return Trip: Post-Cruise Airport Transfers

Disembarkation morning is busy. Thousands of passengers leave the ship at about the same time, and the rideshare and taxi lines at the port can get long.

A few tips for the trip home:

  • Book flights late enough. Disembarkation and getting through customs take time. Many cruisers avoid flights before late morning or early afternoon so they don’t have to rush.
  • Pre-book your ride. A scheduled pickup means your driver is already waiting when you come off the ship with your bags.
  • Make a day of it. If your flight is in the evening, turn the extra hours into a short tour so you’re not stuck waiting at the airport. Our South Florida tours from Miami and Fort Lauderdale make good use of the time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to fly into Miami or Fort Lauderdale for a cruise?

It depends mainly on your departure port. MIA is closest to PortMiami and FLL is closest to Port Everglades. If the other airport has a much cheaper fare, it can still be worth it. Just leave extra time for the drive between Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

How far is Miami airport from the cruise port?

Miami International Airport is roughly 8–10 miles from PortMiami. The drive usually takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic and how busy the port is that day.

How far is Fort Lauderdale airport from Port Everglades?

FLL is only a few miles from Port Everglades. In normal traffic the drive takes about 10–15 minutes.

Can I fly into Fort Lauderdale and sail from Miami?

Yes. It’s common. Plan on at least an hour between FLL and PortMiami, and book a transfer that can handle your whole group and its luggage.

What's the best way to get from the airport to the cruise port with a large group?

A private transfer in a large vehicle, such as a 14-passenger Mercedes Sprinter, is usually the easiest and most cost-effective option. Everyone rides together with their luggage, the price is set in advance, and you’re dropped at your terminal.

Should I fly in the same day as my cruise?

We don’t recommend it. Flight delays happen, and the ship won’t wait. Flying in the day before is the safest choice.
